The James Grayson Blog

It was all change at the club last week. The appointment of Alan Gaffney at the club was the biggest bit of news. Alan has come in on a consultant basis until the end of the year and is going to aid the coaches and try and help push us back up the table. Having an outside view on the current standing will be good. I’m sure there will be honest conversations and and I think he will bring fresh ideas in terms of how he wants the team to play which should help us move forward. Alan has worked for many teams and has a wealth of experience, his most notable are probably munster, Leinster and Ireland where he had great success. Having worked with the likes of Jonny Sexton and Bernard Foley, I can really try and pick his brains about the best fly halves in the world! He previously worked at Saracens where he coached our Director of Rugby, Alan Dickens.

This weekend we took on Gloucester who were in red hot form, compared to not so hot form! We as a group needed to get this monkey off our back and get a win! We had a good week of training, where we focused very much on ourselves, about getting back in the game after you’ve made a tackle or a carry. We started the game well, scoring through a well worked try. Gloucester then had the majority of the ball in the first half and put us under pressure. They went in at half time with the lead. It stayed this way for the majority of the second half until we kicked deep into the 22. The Northampton maul of old returned for the last two minutes and we pushed them over to take the lead. We secured the kick off and ran the clock down. A first win since the beginning of November. After the game we spoke, about how we now need to push on. It’s time to ramp it up and really put pressure on ourselves to move up the table. Alan Gaffney’s first week and he has been part of 2 wins. The wanderers on Sunday and then the first team on Saturday. Not a bad first week of work!

For me personally I am off to Bisham Abbey for an England u20’s camp for a week which I am very excited about. I will keep you updated in the next blog on how it goes! Thanks for all your continued support!
