Big Six Energy Companies to be Probed

Energy regulator Ofgem looks to start a full-scale competition investigation into the energy sector.

The investigation will probe whether retail and energy generation businesses should be broken up within the big-six providers. The investigations look to address allegations that profits are being disguised into the supply-chain sides of the businesses when they really originate from cash-strapped households.

Concerns of collusion in the industry are also to be investigated as providers have been seen raising prices within weeks of one another.

Ofgem’s announcement follows SSE’s price-freeze commitment until 2016 announced yesterday.
