Car Production Racing Forward

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) the rolling 12-month UK output topped 1.5m cars last month for the first time since October 2008, boosted by UK sales in Europe’s only growing market and surging exports to emerging markets such as China and Russia.

Focusing on high-end, high-margin products targeted at faster-growing overseas markets the UK has made a phenomenal turnaround when just a decade ago the industry was dubbed as inefficient, underfunded and uncompetitive.

The British automotive industry has received more than £2.6bn to date in 2013, as foreign-owned manufacturers such as Jaguar, Land Rover and Bentley increase investment in factories and the wider supply chain.

Nissan, which has made the UK its European manufacturing hub the country’s largest plant by output based in Sunderland, would move to round-the-clock production for the first time.
